মুক্তিযুদ্ধের আগে সাবেক পূর্ব পাকিস্তান, মুক্তিযুদ্ধ এবং স্বাধীনতা পরবর্তী বাংলাদেশের আর্থ-সামাজিক-রাজনৈতিক ঘটনাবলীর পটভূমিতে লেখা হয়েছে এই উপন্যাসটি। একটি আদর্শ সমাজব্যবস্থা প্রতিষ্ঠার স্বপ্ন দেখছে উপন্যাসের কাল্পনিক চরিত্ররা, বিশেষ করে প্রধান চরিত্র মুঈন। মুঈন সমর্থন পেয়েছে তার বিদেশি স্ত্রীর মিতার কাছ থেকে এই প্রসঙ্গে। বাংলাদেশের উত্থানের আগেই জীবনযাপনের জন মুঈন গড়ে তুলেছে কম্যুন ব্যবস্থা। সদস্য হিসেবে পেয়েছে সমমনা কিছু মানুষকে। স্বাধীনতা উত্তর বাংলাদেশে ইউটিপিয়ার আদর্শ ক্রমাগত মার খেয়েছে, কিন্তু মুঈনের আশাবাদ তার জন্য তিরোহিত হয়নি। সমাজের বৃহত্তর পরিবেশে মূল্যবোধের অবক্ষয় তাকে নিরুৎসাহিত করেনি ইউটোপিয়া প্রতিষ্ঠার স্বপ্ন দেখা থেকে। তবে তার মনে এক সময় প্রশ্ন জাগে তার মৃত্যুর পরে কী টিকে থাকবে? এমন সময় এক যুদ্ধশিশুকে নিয়ে তার সঙ্গে দেখা করতে আসে সুমন ও সুমী। এরপরে সেই যুদ্ধশিশু যে কিনা এখন যুবক, তার হাতে কম্যুন ভবিষ্যতেও টিকে থাকবে ইউটোপিয়ার সীমিত দৃষ্টান্ত হয়ে, এই নিশ্চিতি পেয়ে স্বস্তির নিঃশ্বাস ফেলে মুঈন। তাকে আরো আশ্বস্ত করে জীবনসঙ্গী মিতা যে প্রবাস থেকে চলে আসবে বলে জানায়। এরপরের বাস্তবতাও উঠে এসেছে এই আখ্যানে।
