১৮৮৭ সালের ২৫ শে মে হাওড়ার চাঁদপাল ঘাট থেকে স্যার জন লরেন্স নামক এক প্রকাণ্ড জাহাজ মহাসমারোহে রওনা দিয়েছিল পুরীর উদ্দেশ্যে। সমুদ্রপথে বালেশ্বর হয়ে কটক। সেখান থেকে পদব্রজে পুরী। এইভাবেই তখন যাত্রা করতে হত নীলাচলধামে।
কিন্তু বঙ্গোপসাগরে প্রবল ঘূর্ণিঝড় এবং সামর্থ্যের তুলনায় অতিরিক্ত যাত্রীগ্রহণে জাহাজটির সলিল সমাধি ঘটে। মৃত্যু হয় সাড়ে সাতশোজন মানুষের, যাদের অধিকাংশই মহিলা। নেটিভ বলেই হয়ত সেভাবে আলোড়ন পড়েনি সমাজে।
ধীরে ধীরে ইতিহাসের পাতায় চাপা পড়ে যায় টাইটানিক জাহাজডুবির প্রায় পঁচিশ বছর আগের সেই হৃদয়বিদারক ঘটনা। হাওড়ার জগন্নাথঘাটের বিবর্ণ এক স্মৃতিফলক এখনো জানান দেয় সেই মর্মান্তিক দুর্ঘটনার। বস্তুত এর পরেই পুরী পর্যন্ত রেলপথ নির্মাণে উদ্যোগী হয় ব্রিটিশ সরকার।
