১৯০০ এর দশকের প্রথম দিকে বাংলা সমাজ এই উপন্যাসে স্থাপিত হয়।গল্পটিতে চারটি নারী চরিত্র রয়েছে - দুটি প্রধান, সাবিত্রী এবং কিরণময়ী, এবং দুটি ছোটখাট চরিত্র, সুরবালা এবং সরোজিনী।উপীন, সতীশ, সাবিত্রী, করণময়ী এবং দিবাকর এইকজনের জীবনে প্রেমের ছোয়া কখনো স্বপ্ন আবার কখনো বিভীষীকা হয়ে বার বার ফি রে আসে, কিন্তু অপবিত্র হয় নাহ কখনোই। সতীশ জমিদারের পুত্র হয়েও স্বভিমানের যাতাকল হতে মুক্ত এবং অন্যের প্রতি স্নেহের দায় বদ্ধতায় আবদ্ধ। সাবীত্রী যে কি নাহ সতীশের মন মন্দিরের দেবী, অভিমানে বার বার সতীশ তাকে দূর করে দিয়েছে কিন্তু মন থেকে এক মুহুর্তের জন্য আড়াল করতে পারেনি। আর সাবিত্রী বিধবা হয়ে নিজের সমস্ত টুকু অঞ্জলি দিয়েছে সতীশের প্রেমের মন্দিরে কিন্তু সমাজকে কখনো উপেক্ষা করার সাহস দেখায়নি। সতীশের সাথে আরেক নাম বাধা পরে আছে উপীনের বন্ধুর বোন সরোজিনী। যে কিনা সতীশকে ভালবেসেছে নিভৃতে, কল্পনার আলোতে। উপীনের সাথে আরেকজনের নাম নাহ বলতে নয়, স্ত্রী সুরবালা। এই নারীটি তার সম্পূর্ণ প্রেম, বিশ্বাস, ভক্তি তার স্বামীকে নিবেদন করেছেন। আর উপীনও তার ভালবাসা সন্মান করে নিজেকে সুরপবালার সাথে বেধে রেখেছেন আমৃত্যু। এই প্রবাহের সব থেকে জটিল এবং গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্র হলো কিরণময়ী, যে সমাজের বিরুদ্ধে বিদ্রোহ ঘোষণা করে বিবাহিত হয়েও আরেকজনকে ভালবেসে, উপীনকে ভালোবেসে। জন্ম থেকে শত লাঞ্ছনার স্বীকার হয়ে স্বামীর কাছেও কখনো স্নেহের পরশ নাহ পেয়ে ভিতর থেকে পাষাণ হয়ে যাওয়া কিরনময়ী কখনো যে বিদ্রোহী হয়ে ওঠে সেই খবর সে নিজেই জানতে পারেনি। তারপর বিদ্রোহের আগুনে যখন উপীনকে দগ্ধ করতে চায়, উপীন তখন সুরবালার বিশ্বাসের শক্ত আবরণে কিরণময়ীকে প্রতিঘাত করে। এরপরেও কিরণময়ীর স্বামী হারানের মৃত্যুর পরে কর্তব্যে বাধা পরে ছোট ভাই দিবাকরকে কিরণময়ীর কাছে রেখে যায়। তারপর দিবাকারের সাথে কিরণময়ীর এক নতুন উপখ্যানের সূচনা হয় । শেষ পর্যন্ত কি কিরণময়ী উপীনের মর্যাদা রাখতে পারবে? সতীশ কি সামজের রক্তচক্ষু উপেক্ষা করে সাবিত্রীকে নিজের করে পাবে? উপীন আর সুরবালা কি তাদের অবিশ্বর ভালবাসা দিয়ে এই নশ্বর পৃথিবী নামক স্থানে একে অন্যকে বেধে রাখতে পারবে? কি হবে সরোজিনীর?

Charitraheen by Sarat Chandra is one of the most famous novels written by the versatile Bengali author almost a hundred years ago.. The background of the novel is set in Bengali society of the early 1900s. The story has four main Bengali women characters–two major, Savitri and Kiranmayi, and two minor, Surbala and Sarojini. The former two are accused of being charitraheen (characterless). It is most interesting that all four characters are totally different and have different images in the society. Sarat chandra Chattopadhyay is a Bengali legendary Novelist of 20 Century. He was born on September 15, 1876 at Debanandapur village in the Hooghly district. He was the second child of his parents. His father’s name was Matilal Chattopadhyay and mother’s name was Bhubanmohini. Sarat grew up in his maternal grandparents’ home at Bhagalpur. His childhood was spent in dire poverty because his father was an idler and paid little attention to sustain his five children. The Author died in 16 January 1938.
