Writer Profile/Biography: R. K. Narayan
R K Narayan (His full name is Rushipuram Krishnaswami Narayan) was born in 1906 in Madras. He was brought up in an upper middle class Brahmin family. His vision of a conservative Hindu society got frequently reflected in his novels and stories. His characterization and setting of novels were mostly completed in a lower middle class economic background whose members were neither rich nor fret with financial worries. Narayan was educated in Maharajah’s College in Mysore.
The stories depicted in his Malgudi Days symbolize common men as heroes who win their destiny with their hidden potentialities and talents. However, the characters were not defiant to shake off the irrationality and superstitious culture of orthodox Hindu society. Narayan had not been an extraordinary student and after his graduation he became a newspaper reporter. Narayan’s assignment had been to write against the injustice faced by non-Brahmins at the hands of Brahmins in public life, government service and education. Narayan’s creativity took a leading role with the publication of over dozen novels, two hundred short stories and four non-fictional books.
Narayan did not advocate any social philosophy or message in his works. He mainly belonged to a conventional Hindu section and thereby subscribed to its ideals. He cherished the beliefs, traditions and rituals with Krishna, Ganesh, astrologers, Pundits and Devdasis crowding and sufficing his concepts of a real India. Narayan married Rajam even though their horoscopes did not match. The astrologer predicted that Narayan would be a widower which surprisingly turned out to be true. This confirmed Narayan’s faith in horoscope. This incident appeared in two of his works, namely The Bachelor of Arts and The Financial Expert.
Narayan showed how caste system has been entrenched in Hindu social fabrics. In Guide he exemplified this when Raju’s mother happens to know Rosie’s affiliation with a dancing girls’ family. Narayan passed away in 2001.
