Writer Profile/Biography: Mulk Raj Anand
Mulk Raj Anand was born in 1905 in Peshawar. He was one of the most acclaimed Indian English writers. He was the towering personality of 20th century intellectual world. He was a versatile figure encompassing various talents being a writer, a political activist, a critic, a thinker and connoisseur of visual arts, architecture and design. He was educated in the University of Punjab and went to London to study in Cambridge University. His political activism was another dimension of his constructive thinking that had been manifested throughout his writing. In fact, Anand’s political concern for the oppressed and rejected had been voiced by him right from his initial writings like Untouchable (1935) and Coolie (1936).
Anand’s novel The Bubble (1988) is an autobiographical sketch of his life that consists of letters, diary entries and essentially deals with self-realization aspects. The novel unfolds a dichotomy between the inside and outside revelations. His creations were touched by his deep distress for the unprivileged section of society at the hands of feudal lords or capitalists. He was the crusader of the downtrodden and upheld their cause in his novels. His Untouchable dared to choose Bakha as the hero who had been systematically humiliated and subjugated by upper cast Brahmin society.
Anand could not but resist himself from participating in the vigorous social movements that swept the whole world during the early decades of twentieth century. His political ideology motivated his creative outpourings.
Anand’s fictional collections portrayed his intense feelings and experiences. His Across the Black Waters, Two leaves and a Bud, The Sword and the Sickle, and Confessions of a Lover genuinely articulated his emotive memories. He was not confident about the existence of God, he was an agnostic. Likewise he thought death as the extinction of human existence. He believed in persistent self-identification of a writer in his creations. He died in Pune on September 28, 2004.
