চরের বসত আজ আছে, কাল নেই।নদীর খেয়াল খুশির উপর নির্ভর করে চরের আয়ু ।নিয়ত ভাসা আর ডোবার খেলায় রত পদ্মার চরের সাথে জড়িত মানুষদের অনিশ্চিত জীবনের মহাকাব্য পদ্মার পলিদ্বীপ উপন্যাস।
ডিঙ্গাখোলা আর লক্ষ্মীরচর পদ্মার বুকে হারিয়ে গেলে দুর্দিন নেমে আসে এরফান মাতব্বরের সংসারে ।জীবিকার তাগিদে মাতব্বরের ছেলে ফজল মাছ ধরাকে পেশা হিসেবে বেছে নেয়।আরশেদ মোল্লা জামাইয়ের এই লজ্জাজনক পেশাকে মেনে নিতে পারে নি, নিজ মেয়ে রূপজানকে তাই শশ্বুরবাড়ি ফিরে আসতে দেয় না আর।
মাছ ধরতে গিয়ে ফজল একদিন দেখতে পায় পদ্মার বুকে জেগে উঠেছে তাদের পূর্বে দখলকৃত খুনের চর। দশবছর আগে এই চর দখলের মারামারিতেই মারা যায় মাতব্বরের বড় ছেলে রশিদ।ফজল বাড়ি এসে পিতার সাথে পরামর্শ করে কোলশরিকদের খবর দিয়ে দখল করে খুনের চর।কিন্তু টাকা আর লাঠির জোরে শক্তিশালী জঙ্গুরুল্লা ডাকাতির মিথ্যা মামলা সাজায় ফজলসহ আরো কয়েকজনকে আস্বামী করে ।পুলিশ খুনের চরে নামলে সবাই পালিয়ে যায়, জঙ্গুরুল্লা দখল নেয় খুনের চরের।ফজলকে ধরে হাজতে নেয় পুলিশ।জেলে থাকা অবস্থায় রাজনৈতিক বন্দীদের সাথে মিলে জেল থেকে পালিয়ে যায় ফজল।ফিরে আসে খুনের চর পুনঃদখলের নতুন উদ্যম নিয়ে।
চরাঞ্চলের মানুষদের সংগ্রামী জীবনের গল্প পদ্মার পলিদ্বীপ। মানুষের নিরন্তর যুদ্ধ চলে সেখানে সর্বগ্রাসী পদ্মা আর সাম্রাজ্যবাদীদের প্রতিভূ জঙ্গুরুল্লার মত কূটকৌশলীদের সাথে।
পদ্মার পলিদ্বীপে আবু ইসহাক মানব-মানবীর প্রেমের এক অপরূপ চিত্র এঁকেছেন । ফজলের প্রতি জরিনার প্রেম যেন এক অমর বেদনাবিধুর প্রণয় উপাখ্যানের অংশবিশেষ।
উপন্যাসে ব্যবহৃত আঞ্চলিক ভাষা আর গ্রামীণ পটভূমির নিঁখুত বর্ণনা উপন্যাসকে শক্তিশালী আর সুপাঠ্য করে তুলেছে।আবু ইসহাকের ‘সূর্য্য দীঘল বাড়ি’র মত ‘পদ্মার পলিদ্বীপ’ আরেকটি অমূল্য ঐশ্বর্য্য বাংলা সাহিত্যের।
