জরাসন্ধ ছদ্মনামের আড়ালে আসল মানুষটি হলেন চারুচন্দ্র চক্রবর্তী (১৯০২ – ১৯৮১)। অর্থনীতিতে এম.এ পাশ করে দার্জিলিং-এ ডেপুটি জেলার হিসেবে কর্মজীবন সুরু করেন। তিরিশ বছর নানা জায়গায় কাজ করার পর ১৯৬০ সালে আলীপুর সেণ্ট্রাল জেলের সুপারিন্টেনডেন্ট হিসেবে অবসর গ্রহণ করেন। চারখণ্ডের ‘লৌহকপাটে’র তিনটি খণ্ডই ওঁর চাকুরিজীবনে লেখা। চতুর্থ খণ্ডটি লেখেন অবসর নেওয়ার পরে এবং কারো কারো মতে সেটিই সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ খণ্ড। ‘লৌহকপাট’ ছাড়াও আরও প্রায় কুড়িটি উপন্যাস উনি লিখেছেন, ‘তামসী’, ‘পাড়ি’, ‘মসীরেখা’, ‘ন্যায়দণ্ড’, ‘উত্তরাধিকার’, প্রভৃতি। ওঁর আত্মজীবনীমূলক লেখা হল ‘নিঃসঙ্গ পথিক’ । এছাড়া ছোটগল্প এবং ছোটদের জন্য লেখা গল্পও ওঁর বেশ কিছু আছে।
বাঙালি জেলারের লেখা এমনই এক অনবদ্য উপন্যাস 'লৌহকপাট' যেখানে কোন ঘটনা সত্য, আর কোন চরিত্রটি জেলার চারুচন্দ্র চক্রবর্তীর নিজের সৃষ্টি তা বোঝা পাঠকের কম্ম নয়। মানুষের মন কতটা গভীর তার হদিস পাওয়া ভার। কিন্তু যে বা যারা অপরাধ করে জেলে গেছে কিংবা নির্দোষ ব্যক্তির মনস্তাত্ত্বিক দ্বন্দ্ব নিয়ে দুর্দান্ত কাজ করেছেন জরাসন্ধ। বাংলা সাহিত্যের অনেক বই নিয়েই ইদানীং আলোচনা হয়। কিন্তু 'লৌহকপাট'-এর মতো সুপাঠ্য গ্রন্থ নিয়ে সেরকম কথাবার্তা নেই।
