রশীদ করীমের উপন্যাসটি প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল ১৯৬১ সালে।অর্থাৎ, পাকিস্তান শাসনামলে। প্রকাশকালটি উপন্যাসের কাহিনীর সাথে কোথায় যেন মেলবন্ধন ঘটাচ্ছিল।
আমাদের 'উত্তম পুরুষ' এর নাম শাকের। তিনি কলিকাতায় থাকেন। আসলে পুরো কাহিনীই বিভাগপূর্ব কলিকাতাকে ঘিরে। দেশভাগ দরজায় কড়া নাড়ছে, রাজনীতিতে মুসলিম লীগ নিজেদের দাবীকে বেশ বাঙালি মুসলমান মানসে বেশ জনপ্রিয় করে তুলেছে। হিন্দু- মুসলমান দ্বন্দ্ব বেশ কল্কে পাচ্ছে।
শাকেরের সাথে ফুটবল খেলতে গিয়ে বন্ধুত্ব হয় অভিজাত পরিবারের মুশতাকের। শাকেরের বাবা নিম্নমাঝারি সরকারি কর্তা, আর মুশতাকের বাবা উচ্চপদস্থ। সেই পদের গৌরব রয়েছে তাদের পরিবারের সকলের। বিশেষত, মুশতাকের দু'এক বছরের বড় সেলিনার।
শাকেরের সাথে ঘটনাপ্রবাহে সহপাঠী শেখরের বন্ধুত্ব গড়ে উঠে, বাড়িতে যাওয়াআসা থাকলেও ধর্মের গন্ডি পেরোয় নি সে সম্পর্ক।কেন শাকের আর শেখর, সলিলদের মধ্যকার বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ রসায়ন হয় নি তার প্রেক্ষিতে ধর্মীয় সংস্কার আর জিন্নার পাকিস্তান দাবীকে উপজীব্য করে লিখতে চেয়েছেন। রশীদ করীমের শাকের এখানে কিন্তু মুসলিম লীগের কট্টর সমর্থক।
এদিকে, যে সেলিনা শাকেরকে গুণতির মধ্যেই ধরতে চাইত না;সেই শাকেরই যেন ঘটনাচক্রে নিজের বয়োজ্যেষ্ঠ আধুনিক সেলিনার কাছাকাছি চলে আসে। সেলিনা কিন্তু মনে রাখার মতই চরিত্র। সেই উপন্যাসকে পাল্টে দিতে পারে নাটকীয়ভাবে।

He was born on 14 August 1925 in Kolkata and died on 26 November 2011. He completed his BA from the Calcutta Islamia College, Kolkata. After the partition of the sub-continent in 1947, his family moved to Dhaka.
