'ঘরের ভেতর বাদামি আলো সারাদিন। ঘরের ভেতর বাদামি আলো সারারাত। জানালায় বাদামি কাগজ সাঁটা। মাথার ওপরে ন্যাংটো বাল্ক্ব। ঘর থেকে বাইরে কিছু দেখা যায় না। মাঝে মাঝে পায়ের শব্দ শোনা যায়। ভারি পায়ের শব্দ।' উপন্যাসের শুরুটা ছিল এ রকম। বাংলাদেশের সাহিত্যে অন্যতম পুরুষ সৈয়দ শামসুল হকের 'নীল দংশন' উপন্যাসের কথা বলছি। এ রকম একটা সূচনাই আমাকে এখন থেকে বহু বছর আগে উপন্যাসটা একটানে শেষ পৃষ্ঠা অবধি পাঠ করতে বাধ্য করেছিল। উপন্যাসের প্রেক্ষাপট আমাদের মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধ। সম্ভবত ১৯৮১ সালে উপন্যাসটি প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয়। কোন কাতারে ফেলা যায় এ উপন্যাসকে? রাজনৈতিক, না ব্যঙ্গাত্মক উপন্যাস? নাকি শেষ পর্যন্ত একজন কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের অস্তিত্ববাদী হয়ে ওঠা, বিদ্রোহ করার কাহিনী? পাকিস্তানি সেনাদের হাতে আটক হওয়া সেই চরিত্র কাজী নজরুল ইসলামকে টর্চার চেম্বারে জ্ঞিাসাবাদ, নির্যাতন, আর অনেকটা চলচ্চিত্রের মতো সাসপেন্সে ঠাসা দৃশ্যের সঙ্গে দৃশ্য গেঁথে গড়ে তোলা টানটান এক গল্প, যা পাঠককে টেনে নিয়ে যায় পরিণতির দিকে, সে উপন্যাসকে কোন ধরনের উপন্যাস বলা যায়?
