এই উপন্যাসের শুরু হয়েছে দ্বিতীয় মহাযুদ্ধের দু-এক বছর আগে। যবনিকা তখন কম্পমান; অচিরেই শুরু হবে বিস্ফোরণ। ভঅরতের স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনের চূড়ান্ত অধ্যায়, বিয়াল্লিশের আগস্ট আন্দোলন, পূর্বপ্রাচ্যে মিত্রশক্তি বাহিনীর পতন, অসম-পূর্ববঙ্গ ছেড়ে ইংরেজ সরকারের পশ্চাদপসরণের পরিকল্পনা- এই সব সময়ের মধ্যে বড় হয়ে উঠছে দুজন কিশোর। একজনের ভূমিকা দর্শকের, সে কোনও কিছুর সঙ্গেই নিজেকে মেলাতে পারে না। আর অন্যজন দুর্দান্ত ও উগ্র, সে আগুনে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়তেও ভয় পায় না। তারা পরের পর পার হয়ে আসে দুর্ভিক্ষ, ইতিহাসের নিষ্ঠুরতম দাঙ্গা এবং ভারতবিভাগের পর স্বাধীনতা।এই উপন্যাসে সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় সেই তরঙ্গ-উত্তাল ঐতিহাসিক পটভূমিকাটিই শুধু চিত্রিত করেননি, তিনি সৃষ্টি করেছেন জীবন্ত মানুষের এক বিরাট মিছিল- কামনা-বাসনা, হৃদয়জ্বালা ও মৃত্যু সত্ত্বেও যারা পটভূমিকার চেয়েও বিশাল হয়ে ওঠে।
