"বাঙালি মুসলমানের মন" শীর্ষক প্রবন্ধটি একটি বিশেষ কারণে লিখিত। স্বঘোষিত নাস্তিক ছিলেন আবুল ফজল (সাহিত্যিক) একদিন সকালে তিনি আবুল ফজলকে টুপি পরে সিরাত অনুষ্ঠানে যাওয়া দেখে বিস্মিত হন। জিয়াউর রহমান সরকারের তখন তিনি উপদেষ্টাও ছিলেন। আবুল ফজলের বদলে যাওয়াটাকে তিনি বিচ্ছিন্ন ঘটনা মনে না করে এর কার্যকারণ সন্ধানের চেষ্টা করেন। আবুল ফজলের পরিবর্তিত রূপ তার মধ্যে প্রচণ্ড রকম আলোড়ন সৃষ্টি করে। সেই আলোড়ন নিয়ে এক রাতে ‘বাঙালি মুসলমানের মন’ শীর্ষক প্রবন্ধটি লেখেন।
"বাঙালি মুসলমানের মন"-এর মূল বিষয়বস্তু হল বাঙালি মুসলমানের প্রকৃত স্বরূপ অন্বেষণ। বাঙালি মুসলমান আসলে কারা, আর তাদের মনের রূপায়ন কোন কোন সমাজ-সাংস্কৃতিক অভিঘাতে গড়ে উঠেছে, সেক্ষেত্রে বাঙালি মুসলমান একত্রে বাঙালি আর মুসলমান হওয়ার জন্যে যে সংকট অনুভব করে ঐতিহাসিক পটভূমিকায় এর একটি সামাজিক সাংস্কৃতিক রূপান্তর ছফা আলোচনা করেছেন। বৌদ্ধধর্ম যুগের রাজত্ব অবসানের পরে মুসলিম বিজয়ের সময়ে এদেশের বড় সংখ্যার একটি বৌদ্ধ এবং হিন্দুদের অন্ত্যজ (ডোম, হড্ডি, হরিজন ইত্যাদি) জনগোষ্ঠী ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণ করে। শত বছরের ইতিহাসে রক্তে এসেছে স্রোত। এক রক্ত আরেক রক্তের সাথে মিশে সৃষ্টি করেছে নতুন জনগোষ্ঠী।
