বিমল মিত্রের ক্লাসিক " সাহেব বিবি গোলাম "। কলকাতার উত্থান, বাংলার ইতিহাসের রসে রচিত এই উপন্যাসকে ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস বলব না । বরং একে একটি আর পাঁচদশটি উপন্যাসের মতো সাদাটে সামাজিক উপন্যাসই বলতে বেশি স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যবোধ করব।
বাংলার জমিদারদের উত্থান এবং তাদের ক্ষয়িষ্ণুতা পেয়ে বিলুপ্ত হয়ে যাবার ইতিহাসকে গল্পের ঢঙে লিখেছেন বিমল বাবু। এই জমিদারশ্রেণিটির বাবু কালচারকে ধারণ করেছেন চৌধুরী বাড়ির ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে। যেখানে ওভারসিয়ার ভূতনাথ পেল্লায় এক বাড়ি ভাঙতে এসে স্মৃতিচারণ করছে বড়বাড়ির, বাংলার ইতিহাসের। গ্রাম থেকে উঠে আসা ভূতনাথ হয়ে ওঠে মূল বর্ণনাকারী। বোনের স্বামী ব্রজরাখাল কাজ করে জমিদার বাড়িতে, যাকে সারা বইতে বড়বাড়ি বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে। সেই নিয়ে আসে ভূতনাথকে। ব্রজরাখালের শালা ভূতনাথ হয়ে যায় সবার শালা। অর্থাৎ তার নাম হয় শালাবাবু।
সেই শালাবাবু কলকাতার বড়বাড়িতে এসে জড়িয়ে পড়ে ব্রাহ্ম পরিবার জবাদের সাথে। জবাময়ী! কী আশ্চর্যকথা যুক্তি আর সংস্কার এই দু'য়ের দ্বন্দ্বে জড়িয়ে পড়ে জবাময়ী। আর ভূতনাথের সাথে জবাময়ীরই বা কি সম্পর্ক? (Book Reveiw: Good Reads)
