সেই সময় একটি বাংলা ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস যার উপজীব্য ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর ব্রিটিশ শাসনামলের বিকাশমান কলকাতা নগরীর সমাজ এবং মানুষ। বিখ্যাত ভারতীয় বাঙালি সাহিত্যিক সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় এ উপন্যাসের রচয়িতা।
ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীতে বাঙালির নবজাগরণ উপন্যাসটির অন্যতম মূল বিষয়বস্তু। ঈশ্বর চন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর, মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত, প্রিন্স দ্বারকানাথ ঠাকুর, দেবেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, কেশব চন্দ্র সেন, ডেভিড হেয়ার এবং জন বেথুন এর মতো প্রখ্যাত চরিত্র নিয়ে গড়ে উঠেছে এ উপন্যাসের আখ্যানভাগ।
প্রথমে দেশ পত্রিকায় ধারাবাহিকভাবে প্রকাশিত হয় উপন্যাসটি। পরবর্তীতে কলকাতার আনন্দ পাবলিশার্স ১৯৮১ সালে দুই খন্ডে পুস্তক আকারে উপন্যাসটি প্রকাশ করে। একই প্রকাশনী থেকে উপন্যাসের অখন্ড সংস্করণ প্রকাশিত হয় ১৯৯১ সালে।
Shei Somoy by Sunil Gangopadhyay is a historical popular bengali novel which is written by Sunil Gangopadhyay. The book was first published in 1991. At first the book was published in Desh Magazine serially and then in Book. The book got Bankim Award in 1983 and Academy Award in 1985. The story of the novel centers around many historical figures including Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the reformer; Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the poet; the father and son duo of Dwarkanath Tagore and Debendranath Tagore; Harish Mukherjee, the journalist; Keshab Chandra Sen, the Brahmo Samaj radical; David Hare and John Bethune the English educationists etc. Sunil Gangopadhyay is Benglali Poet, Writer, Novelist of India and creator of Kaka Babu Character in his writings . He is popular among child and young of India and Bangladesh. He born in Faridpur, Bangladesh 7th September 1934 and died 23 Octobor 2012.
