সারেং বৌ - শহীদুল্লা কায়সার' আইয়ুব খান জেলে পাঠিয়েছিলেন, তাই আমি সাহিত্যিক হতে পেরেছি' এই উক্তিটি যিনি করেছেন তিনি ঢাকা কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারে বসেই লিখেছেন 'সারেং বৌ' নামের বিখ্যাত সেই উপন্যাসটি। যেটির জন্য তাঁকে আদমজী সাহিত্য পুরস্কার দেওয়া হয়। আর এই 'সারেং বউ' উপন্যাসটির স্রষ্টা শহীদুল্লা কায়সার। যিনি তিন পর্যায়ে আট বছর জেলে বন্দি জীবন কাটিয়েছেন এবং জেল জীবনের এই দীর্ঘ সময়ে তিনি পড়াশুনা ও সাহিত্য চর্চা করেছেন নিবিষ্টমনে। 'সারেং বউ' ছাড়াও কারাগারে বসেই তিনি অধিকাংশ গল্প- উপন্যাস রচনা করেছেন।সারেং বৌ উপন্যাসে বাংলাদেশের সমুদ্র-উপকূলবর্তী জনপদের বিশ্বস্ত চিত্র আছে।কদম সারেং সৎ বলে সহকর্মীদের মত বাড়ি ও দালান করতে পারে নি।স্ত্রী নবিতুনকে নিয়ে আর্থিক কষ্টের মধ্যেও সে সুখে থাকে।প্রকৃতির বিরুদ্ধতায় সারেং যখন দীর্ঘদিন নিখোঁজ,সেই সময় যুবতী নবিতুনের উপর দারিদ্র্য ও লোলুপ সমাজপতিদের লোলুপতা নেমে আসে।দাম্পত্য আদর্শনিষ্ঠ বলে নবিতুন সবকিছুকে পরাজিত করতে পারে।সারেং কদম যখন ফিরে আসে তখন সাগরের বুকে সে তখন চরম মাত্রায় পিপাসিত।এ অবস্থায় ধর্মীয় বিধি লংঘন করে নবিতুন স্তন্যদুগ্ধ পান করিয়ে স্বামীকে বাঁচতে সাহায্য করে।এই উপন্যাসে সব সংস্কার তুচ্ছ করে মানুষকে জয়ী দেখানো হয়েছে।
Sareng Bou by Shahidullah Kaiser is one of most popular novels of Shahidullah Kaiser. He wrote the book in Dhaka Central Jail and He got Adamzi Sahittya Puroskar. The book based on the lives of people living in our costal areas of Bangladesh, was admired by many while stirring up controversy for some bold statements it made. A movie "Sareng Bou" directed by Abdullah Al Mamun was adapted from the novel in 1978 and it was a hit Bengali movie. Shahidullah Kaiser was famous Bangladeshi author and novelist. Full name was Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah. He was born in 16 February 1927 in Feni. He also played an important role in the Language Movement in 1952, and was imprisoned after it by the Pakistan government. In the next 10 years, he served a total of eight years behind bars. During this time, Shahidullah Kaiser wrote a number of remarkable plays, short stories and novels.
