সুন্দর সহজসরল ঝর ঝরে লেখনী।শংকর অত্যন্ত প্রাঞ্জল ভাষায় খুবই সুন্দর করে একটি বিশেষ সময়ের চিত্র তুলে ধরেছেন।শুধু সময় বললে ভুল বলা হবে এক বিশেষ সময়ে কলকাতা কোর্টের এক সুন্দর ছবি এঁকেছেন লেখক।উপন্যাসটি কে আত্নজীবনী বলা চলে তবে একটু ভিন্ন আংগিকে লেখা। বইটি কে বলা যায় এক জীবনের আড়ালে অনেক জীবনের গল্প।কোর্টের জীবন অনেক বৈচিত্র্যময়। কত ধরণের মানুষের আনাগোণা এই প্রাংগনে,কত ধরনের লড়াই চলে এখানে। মক্কেলের জীবনের সাথে জড়িয়ে যায় ব্যারিস্টার, এটর্নি, এমনকি ব্যারিস্টারের বাবুদেরও জীবন।এ যেন এক জীবনে অনেক জীবন। উপন্যাস টিতে অনেকগুলো মানুষের গল্প শোনানো হয়েছে, এই জীবন গুলো কিভাবে যেন জড়িয়ে গেছে লেখকের সাথে। পুরো উপন্যাস জুড়েই নানান অভিজ্ঞতার গল্প, সাথে আছে ইতিহাস,অখন্ডিত ভারতবর্ষের ইতিহাস।
"বুদ্ধিজীবি লেঠেল সম্প্রদায়ের" কষ্ট, পরিশ্রম, একাগ্রতা, সাধনা সবই তুলে ধরেছেন লেখক অত্যন্ত সাবলীল ভাবে।সবটুকু ডেডিকেশন দিয়ে কাজ না করলে আদালত পাড়ায় টিকে থাকা যে কতখানি মুশকিল হয়ে পরতো সেইসব স্নায়ুচাপ আর মস্তিষ্কের যুদ্ধের দিনগুলোর কথাও বলতে ভুলেননি লেখক।কেউ জয়ী হতেন,কারো হতো পরাজয়, যারা হারিয়ে যেতেন তারাও কি পারতেন আদালত প্রাংগনের মায়া ছাড়তে? নাকি আদালত তাদের ভুলে যেত? এইসব প্রশ্নের উত্তরও পাওয়া যাবে বইটিতেই।
