আনন্দমঠ ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর ঔপন্যাসিকবঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় বিরচিত একটি বাংলা উপন্যাস। এর প্রকাশকাল ১৮৮৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দ। ভারতবর্ষের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে এর একটি বিশেষ ভূমিকা আছে। এই উপন্যাসটি ছাপার বিরূদ্ধে ব্রিটিশ সরকার আইন পাশ কৱে, তবে এর হস্তলিখিত গুপ্ত সংস্করণ জনগণের মাঝে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। উপন্যাসটি মুসলমান-বিরোধী মতধারার জন্য কিছুটা বিতর্কিত। এই উপন্যাসের কাহিনী ১৭৭৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সংঘটিত উত্তর বঙ্গের সন্ন্যাসী আন্দোলনের ওপর ভিত্তি করে রচিত। এই উপন্যাসেই বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র বন্দে মাতরম গানটি লেখেন। পরবর্তীতে ভারতীয় স্বদেশপ্রেমীরা "বন্দে মাতরম" বাক্যটি জাতীয়তাবাদী শ্লোগান হিসাবে গ্রহণ করে।
উপন্যাসে চরিত্ররা অনেক জায়গায় সরাসরি মুসলমানদের আক্রমণ করেছে। কিন্তু এর কারণ কী? উপন্যাস পড়ে যেটুকু অনুধাবন করা যায়, তাতে মনে হয় মীরজাফরের বেইমানি আর পরবর্তীতে নিষ্ঠুর রাজ্য শাসনই এই 'বিদ্বেষ'-এর সৃষ্টি করেছে। কারণ ভবানন্দের মুখ থেকে আমরা শুনি, 'সকল দেশের রাজার সঙ্গে রক্ষণাবেক্ষণের সম্বন্ধ; আমাদের মুসলমান রাজা রক্ষা করে কই?'
উপন্যাসের পটভূমি ছিল ছিয়াত্তরের মন্বন্তর। আবার কাছাকাছি সময়ে ঘটেছিল ফকির-সন্ন্যাসী বিদ্রোহ। দুটো থেকেই মশলা নিয়েই বঙ্কিম তার উপন্যাস গেঁথেছেন। মহেন্দ্র আর কল্যাণী ছিল তার উপন্যাসের বাহক। এই দুই চরিত্রের উপর ভর করেই উপন্যাস এগিয়ে গেছে।
আনন্দমঠ-এ বঙ্কিম তার নিজস্ব কিছু তত্ত্ব চরিত্রের মুখ দিয়ে প্রকাশ করেছেন। তার উদ্দেশ্য ছিল সমাজকে কিছু 'শেখানো', বিশেষত তৎকালীন তরুণ হিন্দুসমাজকে। আর এই জায়গাতেই এই উপন্যাসের মূল নিহিত। সেজন্যই আনন্দমঠ 'উদ্দেশ্যমূলক দোষে দুষ্ট'।
Anandamath by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay is a popular Bengali novel which is written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. The book was first published in 1882. Set in the background of the Sannyasi Rebellion in the late 18th century, it is considered one of the most important novels in the history of Bengali and Indian literature. Its importance is heightened by the fact that it became synonymous with the struggle for Indian independence from the British Empire. The novel was banned by the British (Source: Wikipedia). Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay is famous Indian novelist, Poet, Journalist and composer of India's National Song. He born 27th June 1838 in 24 Porgona District, India and Died in 4th April 1894. He was born in Kantalpura 24 Pargana District of West Bengal. His father’s name was Yadav Chandra Chattopadyay and his mother’s name was Durga Devi. He was brought up in a very conservative Brahmin Bengali family. He completed his elementary education from Midnapur and did his graduation from Presidency College in the year 1857. Bankim Chandra was married at a very early age of 11. His first wife died in 1959 and he was married again to Rajalakshmi Devi. His first published novel in English was Rajmohan’s wife.
