নীলগঞ্জ গ্রামে ১৯৭১ সালের পহেলা মে পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনী আর তাদের দোসর রাজাকারের একটি দল কাকডাকা ভোরে গিয়ে হাজির হয়। তার আস্তানা করে গ্রামের স্কুলে। সেখানে তারা কয়েকজনকে আটকে রাখে, স্কুলের একজন নিরীহ শিক্ষক, মসজিদের ইমাম তাদের বন্দি।
নীলগঞ্জের পাশের এক জলা এলাকায় মুক্তি বাহিনী লুকিয়ে আছে এমন খবর পেয়ে পাকিস্তানি আমি এসেছে। তারা জানতে চায় সত্যিই মুক্তি বাহিনী আছে কিনা। নিরীহ বন্দিরা মুক্তি বাহিনীর কোন খবরই জানতো না, তাই তাদের অমানুষিক, বর্ণনাতীত পাশবিক নির্যাতন করে।
রাতে তারা মুক্তি বাহিনীর লুকিয়ে থাকার যায়গায় অতর্কিতে হামলা করবে ঠিক করে। আর সারাদিন ধরে নানাভাবে অত্যাচার করে বেরায় সারা গ্রামজুড়ে। নারীদের লাঞ্ছিত করে, আগুন দেয় বাড়ি-ঘরে। এমনকি তাদের অত্যাচার থেকে গ্রামের পাগলও রেহায় পায়না। রাতে হামলা করতে যাওয়ার আগে বন্দিদের ধরে পাশের জলা ধারে নিয়ে গিয়ে গুলি করে মারে। শেষে মারার ভয়ে একজন স্বীকার করে যে মুক্তি বাহিনী লুকিয়ে আছে। এভাবেই গল্প শেষের দিকে এগিয়ে চলে।
