আলালের ঘরের দুলাল'-এর লেখক প্যারীচাঁদ মিত্র। তার ছদ্মনাম 'টেকচাঁদ ঠাকুর'। আলালের ঘরের দুলাল-কে বাংলা ভাষায় রচিত প্রথম সফল উপন্যাস হিসেবে ধরে নেয়া হয়। কলকাতার সমকালীন সমাজ এর প্রধান বিষয়বস্তু। উপন্যাসটি ১৮৫৪ সালে লেখকের প্রতিষ্ঠিত মাসিক পত্রিকায় ধারাবাহিকভাবে ছাপা হয় এবং বই আকারে প্রকাশিত হয় ১৮৫৮ সালে।
'গ্রন্থটি সম্পূর্ণ সামাজিক পটভূমিকায় রচিত। নব্য শিক্ষিত ইয়ংবেঙ্গলদের কার্যকলাপ ও পরিণতি গ্রন্থটির মূল প্রতিপাদ্য বিষয়। প্যারীচাঁদ মিত্র এই নবলব্ধ দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে লক্ষ্য করলেন যে, ধর্ম ও নীতিহীনতাই উচ্ছৃঙ্খলতার মূল কারণ। সুতরাং জীবনযাত্রা প্রণালীর মধ্যেই রয়েছে এ থেকে মুক্তির পথ। এ কথা প্রতিপন্ন করার জন্যেই তিনি আলালের ঘরের দুলালের কাহিনী নির্মাণ করেন।ধনী বিষয়ী বাবুরামের পুত্র মতিলাল কুসঙ্গে পড়ে এবং শিক্ষার ব্যপারে পিতার অবহেলা তাকে অধ:পতনে নিয়ে যায়। পিতার মৃত্যুর পর মতিলাল প্রাপ্ত সব সম্পত্তি নষ্ট করে ফেলে। পরে দু:খের জীবনে তার বোধোদয় ঘটে এবং হৃদয়-মন পরিবর্তিত হওয়ায় সে সৎ ও ধর্মনিষ্ট হয়। ধূর্ত উকিল বটলর, অর্থলোভী বাঞ্ছারাম, তোষামদকারী বক্রেশ্বর ইত্যাদি চরিত্র জীবন্ত। তবে সর্বাপেক্ষা উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো মোকাজান মিঞা বা ঠকচাচা। চরিত্রটি ধূর্ততা, বৈষয়িক বুদ্ধি ও প্রানময়তা নিয়ে এ গ্রন্থের সর্বাপেক্ষা জীবন্ত চরিত্র।
